About Marigold Furniture
From the World of Kevin Francis Design
Where Heritage Meets Home
with Kevin Francis O'Gara
There's something transformative about the way a single piece of furniture can anchor a room—not through its size alone, but through the stories it tells. When I first encountered the vibrant florals of authentic Indian chintz, with their jewel-toned blooms and centuries-old patterns, I knew I'd found something remarkable. These weren't just pretty prints; they were a living design tradition that deserved to be celebrated in contemporary homes.
That discovery became Marigold Furniture—a collection of semi-custom floral sofas that honor the rich textile heritage of India while serving the real needs of modern living.
My Design Journey
Growing up as a fifth-generation Atlantan, I was raised with an appreciation for Southern hospitality and the art of creating spaces that welcome life in all its beautiful messiness. My parents' love for cooking and entertaining taught me early that the most meaningful rooms are designed for living, not just looking.
As a sophomore in high school, I founded my design blog Thou Swell, exploring how to mix antiques with contemporary pieces to create spaces that feel both timeless and personal. What began as teenage curiosity has grown into a platform featured in Better Homes & Gardens, Domino, HGTV Magazine, and House Beautiful. Through years of collaborating with design brands and curating interiors, I've learned that exceptional design respects tradition while embracing innovation.
At 21, I launched Kevin Francis Design, specializing in luxury custom area rugs. As a painter and collagist, I approach design like working on a blank canvas—drawing inspiration from Atlanta's magnificent trees, whose seasonal transformations continue to influence my organic aesthetic. This same artistic sensibility now shapes every Marigold sofa.
My Philosophy: New Regency Style™
My signature approach, New Regency Style™, celebrates the balance between reverence and rebellion. It honors the craftsmanship and grace of traditional design while infusing it with contemporary energy. This philosophy recognizes that the most enduring interiors aren't frozen in time—they evolve with their inhabitants while maintaining their essential character.
The Story of Chintz: From India to Your Home
Chintz has an extraordinary history that most people are unaware of. The word itself comes from the Hindi "chint," and these vibrant floral fabrics were first created by Indian artisans using intricate hand-printing and painting techniques. In the 17th and 18th centuries, European traders were so captivated by Indian chintz that it sparked a global textile revolution.
The original Indian chintz featured bold florals in rich jewel tones—deep indigos, saffron golds, ruby reds, and emerald greens. These weren't the pastel English country florals many associate with chintz today; they were dramatic, sophisticated patterns rooted in Mughal design traditions and centuries of textile mastery.
Marigold Furniture returns chintz to its authentic origins. Our Indian-inspired floral fabrics celebrate this heritage with patterns that feel both exotic and timeless, honoring the artisans who first perfected these techniques while creating furniture for how we live today.
Why Floral Sofas Are Timeless
In a world of minimalist monotones and safe neutrals, floral sofas represent a return to joy, personality, and pattern. As designer Miles Redd beautifully expressed: "A pretty print fabric will always be a pretty print fabric. It's lovely, it's romantic, and it goes a long way toward enlivening a simple background."
There's wisdom in his words about practicality too: "The great secret of chintz is that it's very practical—floral prints don't show a lot of dirt, and they wear so well." This is furniture designed for real life—beautiful enough to elevate your space, durable enough to withstand everything from coffee spills to playful pets.
Contemporary designers have rediscovered what decorators have known for centuries: floral upholstery brings movement, lightness, and personality to a room. Whether you choose bold, saturated patterns or softer botanical prints, a floral sofa becomes the foundation for layered, collected interiors that feel alive and personal.
Craftsmanship That Honors Tradition
Every Marigold sofa is handcrafted in Dallas, Texas, and Los Angeles, California, by artisans who bring generations of woodworking expertise to their craft. We combine old-world techniques with modern technology to create furniture that's built to become a family heirloom.
Our frames are made from FSC-certified engineered hardwood or solid kiln-dried alder wood, joined together with corner blocks, industrial staples, and low-VOC glues. Advanced unidirectional webbing provides lasting support and comfort. Premium high-resiliency foam cores wrapped in Dacron create cushions that maintain their shape and comfort for years, all TB-117-2013 compliant and free of flame-retardant chemicals.
The fabrics we've curated come from responsible suppliers committed to both beauty and safety. Many carry Oeko-Tex® certification (free of harmful substances), GreenGuard Gold certification (low chemical emissions), and CertiPUR-US certification (foam free of VOCs and toxins). When comfort is everything, every detail matters.

A Personal Touch
Living in Atlanta with my poodles Leopold and Persephone, I'm constantly reminded that great design must accommodate real life. My home serves as both a testing ground and an inspiration, and every piece must earn its place through beauty and practicality.
As someone who finds endless inspiration in the natural world, I'm drawn to the way florals bring the outside in. The marigold—with its golden warmth and deep cultural significance in Indian traditions—embodies everything this collection represents: color, joy, heritage, and the celebration of beauty in everyday life.
This is furniture for people who understand that homes should be sanctuaries where life actually happens—where children play, pets nap, friends gather, and memories accumulate. Our floral sofas are designed not to be precious showpieces, but beloved companions in your daily life.
